Japanese Melon pan (メロンパン). Melon Pan is sweet bread covered in a thin layer of crisp biscuit/cookie crust with grid line pattern on top. The Japanese word for bread is "pan (パン)", which came from the Portuguese word for bread. Now why is it called " melon "?

Melon pan was probably one of my favourite Japanese sweet bread (Kashi Pan) next to Anpan (red bean paste bun) growing up. You can have Japanese Melon pan (メロンパン) using 16 ingredients and 11 steps. Here is how you achieve it.
Ingredients of Japanese Melon pan (メロンパン)
- Prepare of Cookie dough crust.
- It's 1/2 of softened butter (110g).
- Prepare 3/4 cup of powdered sugar (90g).
- Prepare 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Prepare 1-2 of eggs.
- Prepare 1 cup of and two tsp of flour and 1 cup and two tsp of cornstarch.
- Prepare of Bread Dough.
- Prepare 1 of large egg.
- It's 3 of and ¼ cups of flour (400g).
- You need 1/4 cup of sugar (50g).
- Prepare 1 tsp of salt.
- You need 1 cup of milk (250ml).
- You need 2 of and 1/4 tsp instant yeast (7g).

Melon Bread, or Melon Pan, is a sweet Japanese bread. The bread is commonly eaten in Japan and is a very popular snack and treat for people of all ages. Add flour, salt, butter, sugar in the pan of your bread machine. Add yeast in your machine's yeast compartment.

- For the cookie dough: Put the butter and the powder sugar In a bowl and stir with a rubber spatula..
- Add vanilla and eggs little by little and mix well. Then, Sift and add the flour and cornstarch..
- Once you are fine wrap the cookie dough with cling film and Leave it in the fridge for one hour..
- For the Bread Dough: Add the one cup milk,1 egg, 2 and ¼ tsp instant yeast and mix..
- Add the flour, sugar and salt and mix until the dough forms..
- Then transfer it to a slightly floured counter and knead it for 10 minutes. Add the 55g softened butter and knead until smooth and elastic..
- Make it round, put it in a bowl and cover it for about one hour or until it doubled in size..
- After it doubled in size, punch out the gas and divide it in 12 pieces and form them into small balls. Cover them with a wet cloth and leave them for 15 minutes..
- After the 15 minutes divide the cookie dough in 12 pieces. Then, Roll out the cookie dough (one at a time) between two layers of plastic wrap and flatten it. Place the flatten cookie dough on top of bread dough and enclose it..
- Once all twelve pieces are done dip them in sugar and make a crisscross or diamond pattern on the dough. Place the dough on a cooking sheet and cover for 40 minutes..

The most famous melon pan (メロンパン meronpan) are from Asakusa Kagetsudo Honten in Tokyo where you can enjoy them plain or filled with ice cream. Despite the name, these buns have nothing to do with melon. They are called melon pan (or melon bread or melon buns) just because of their particular shape, similar to a melon.
